London's first ice sculpting festival took place in front of the Natural History Museum over the weekend. Giant blocks of ice (weighing 2 tons a piece) were carved into amazing sculptures. Smaller blocks were used for those keen to learn this craft.

Lucky you! I tried to go on sunday but it was already finished so thanks for that picture, I can have a glimpse of what I missed...
It is a nice reminder of the huge ice palaces and sculptures that they create in Hokkaido at Sapporo, Japan. I was there in 1953 and I just thought it was a super cold place.c
With the birds and the chimney pots your photo put me to mind of Bleak House - but I digress.
I think there is a major ice-carving festival in Shanghai each year that we in Australia get extensive coverage. It lasts for quite a few days. I don't imagine that the London sculptures lasted very long at all.
Not an easy thing to do, I would image: to carve ice!
I never would have thought of London for ice sculpture! Is it becoming the frozen north, then? I wonder if this will be the first of many, or not... (It cold also in the 2nd half of the 19th C., I think?)

Obviously an ideal time for this festival!
What fun! It's amazing what they can do with a big block of ice!

Did you have a go?! Nice angle for the photo.
I used my pun over at Ham's Blog (he had a similar post) :)
