If chairs could talk what stories they'd tell. Well this one does.
London until very recent years was grubby. Yes I know if you walk down Oxford Street you'd say nothing has changed. However this seat tells a different story. Actually it is the lichen that tells the story.
As recently as 1977 a mere 11 varieties of lichen could be found, due to the pollution of coal fires. Now they are fairly common place with this public garden boasting 38 different species.

Doesn't look like a place to sit in one's finery.
That's a great photo ... can't believe the increase in the varieties of lichen! Amazing.
I read somewhere that London bee-keepers are producing wonderful honey because of the sheer variety of flowers and clean air free of pesticides. How our perspective can change. Good post and pic :)
Wow! Great shot. Thank you for the info.
WOW - that is an INCREDIBLE shot! I would love to have that hanging in my house!
Well done!
Fabulous photo! I like your attention to detail =]
Not sure I'd want to sit there, but what interesting info.
Really interesting photo! Don't think I'd want to sit on the bench though!
That photo it's hard to believe that it was taken in London
I left London and the UK in 1962, all I can remember is how sooty/dirty the buildings were.
I have seen photos since it really cleaned up well.
Wow, I didn't know there were so many different varieties!
This wonderful photo is an excellent study in textures. What a beauty!
