The London Bridge of our times was opened in 1973. Various London Bridges have spanned the Thames on this spot for centuries. Each with its own tales.The tales of this one? Well amongst them is the collision by the warship HMS Jupiter in 1984 causing substantial damage to both ship and bridge. The commander was later court marshaled.

The commander thought they said "we're bringing you a vodka on the rocks" instead of "you're running the ship onto the rocks!"

For those unfamiliar with London, or this part at least, this photograph was taken from London Bridge and is of the rail bridge entering Cannon Street Station on the right. Between the two towers, there used to be a large glazed roof. I think it may have been the largest uninterrupted roof span in the world for a couple of years, before St Pancras was completed in 1868. Anyway, it was taken down to avoid being bombed during the Second World War and, sure enough, the station did suffer several direct hits. Unfortunately so did the roof, which was being stored in Kent...
