Sunday Bridges - Albert's R & R

Albert on holiday? Well sort of. The Albert Bridge built in the 1850's, a hybrid of a cable stayed and suspension, the bridge is closed for 18 months for a bit of a make over.
A grade II-listed (that means it's a bit important) it is in need of structural work to meet the demands of modern traffic. Even back in its original days it wasn't really strong enough for heavy traffic.
One of only two road bridges over the Thames that has never been replaced.

Courtesy of host Louis La Vache check out other Sunday Bridges.

It is a graceful bridge - most attractive. I can imagine the traffic chaos ensuing from its closure, though.

I had to laugh at your definition of grade II!

I like all that's going here and how the pretty bridge is reflected and best of all, it reminds me of my 7 year long stay in London in the days when London wasn't full of French! Thanks for that!

«Louis» is very happy to have you join Sunday Bridges with this beautiful bridge. Speaking of woobly bridges - the cantilever section of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is being replaced. In the 1989 earthquake, part of it (with traffic on it) fell into the Bay. Twenty years of political wrangling and a $400,000,000 cost over-run later, it is finally under construction...

Really nice. I had never seen and image of it.

I wouldn't have guessed this bridge was that old. Back where I grew up in Illinois, a lot of the old bridges are being replaced by suspension bridges so I guess I had a more modern viewpoint of them.

I've always love the elegance of this bridge. A year and a half is a long time - so it must be major structural work. That would make me a bit nervous after the fact of having driven over it the last month!

Funny, that bridge always seems to be just about to go under repair or have just been repaired, perhaps I'm just losing track of time! :)
