Olympic Torch 1948

The relay with the Olympic torch began in 1948. There were around 1720 torches that were carried, often the bearers were allowed to keep them. A few have popped up in recent years for sale.
This one, that I don't know the origins of was available at the end of the London 10K run for you to pose with.

It always begs the question, why?

I'd never considered what happened to Olympic torches or even that they were new for each Olympiad. It's rather attractive, isn't it? You'd need a sconce to display it properly, and a castle for the sconce . . . ;-)

This is a lovely capture and a great little history of the torch :o) I know the bearers for the recent Canadian torch relay were allowed to keep their torches.
