St Helen's church built in the early 1200's and St Mary Axe (Gherkin) behind it, opened in 2004. The Gherkin is currently the second tallest building in London but will drop down a place after the Shard opens.I'll show you progress on this new building soon. Do let me know what you think of it.

ReplyDeleteI think the neighbouring old and new buildings in many places add to the special "flair" of London - not always, but often. It shouldn't become a city of skyscrapers, though.
ReplyDeleteSome time ago I spent time round there and the Lloyds building with 35mm monochrome and wide angle lenses - it's a great area for photos.

ReplyDeleteLove the blog but I'm afraid this is St Andrew's rather than St Helen's, although easily confused as St Andrew's is an offshoot chapel of St Helen's.

ReplyDeleteFantastic shot. I love the contrast between the two buildings. The Gherkin is so wedged in between other buildings it's hard to get a full on shot. I think the contrast works even better.

The London skyline is ever-changing and this is a great illustration of that.

ReplyDeleteFor me, this rich architectural palimpsest gives London a depth of beauty and fascination that will take more than one lifetime to examine. Just round the corner from here we have Leadenhall Market contrasting with Lloyd's, complete with a preserved wall from the previous Lloyd's building. Indeed, inside Lloyd's itself we have the Georgian Adam Room transplanted from Bowood House.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling the Shard is already the tallest building in London, having overtaken One Canada Square just before Christmas. Restricting ourselves to the Square Mile, or the City of London, the Gherkin used to be the second tallest behind Tower 42, but last year the Heron Tower rose above them both. In a couple of years, its throne will be usurped by the Pinnacle/Bishopsgate Tower or "Helter Skelter". My favourite 122 Leadenhall, or the Cheesegrater, sloped to preserve views of St Paul's Cathedral, will be built between the Gherkin and Lloyd's complete with an atrium designed to frame views of yet another nearby church.
