The portrait artists of Leicester Square were forced to leave their patch during the £15 million refurbishment of the square. Although the work has now finished and the artists are still paying their expensive monthly licences, the council still refuses to give them permission to return.In the meantime the square looks like this:
No where to sit and all the statues have gone. The artists were always on the outside of the square and a big hit with tourists.A lot of money has gone into making our square dull and lifeless.
Bring back the artists!

Wow, that is a real shame. That was such a fun place to visit, always full of people and activity.
Bring back the artists indeed! A similar thing is happening to the main square in Old Montreal. They aren't refurbishing it, but they are gradually booting out all the street artists and they are also cutting back on horse drawn carriage rides, two things that were always very popular with both locals and tourists. They say it makes the square more welcoming, we say it makes it dull.
I think there is a bond between the big cities in Europe, in Amsterdam it is the same at Dam square.
So vibrant once, and now...it's baffling how these urban-planning decisions happen.

I always love seeing the artists and I'm sorry that bureaucracy is getting in the way - as so often happens. I hope to see them back and maybe if enough people protest, they will be.
