For many young people in Europe buying an inter rail ticket that takes them through Europe is a right of passage. It is often their first overseas travel on their own or with their friends.
I've just read Alessandro Gallenzi's book "Inter Rail, which is the tale of a young Italian man on just such an adventure. He leaves his small provincial town with an inter rail ticket, a map, a change of clothes and dreams of changing his life.His squeezes a huge number of adventures into a relatively short space of time, and mostly they are what could only be described as a young man's dream. Each chapter sees him in a different European city with yet another adventure. When he arrives in London it is by train that brings him into Victoria Station. With very little money, one night he sleeps rough and the next night he spends in absolute luxury, this is typical of the contrasts of his adventures. He falls in love, loses all his money, wins a fortune in Monte Carlo and gets involved with a conman.
This book will certainly appeal to anyone who has already been on an inter rail adventure or is planning one.

That sounds like a fun book and love that picture. Here in the states, we don't travel by rail hardly at all. So train adventures are fun for me.
That is one of my unfulfilled dreams, buy an inter rail ticket and travel through Europe for several weeks.
This takes me back! It's a rite of passage for Americans too (at least when I was in my early 20s, a while back :) - the idea of being in a completely different country after a day on the rails is quite different and exciting! :)
This takes me back a few years. I used to travel this way back in the mid 1980s. Great fun it was. And we were out of money a few times. Met many fun people. Those were the days.

I have tried BritRail and Inter Rail, and I know it has become popular again. Perhaps worth trying for a few weeks again. Time will show....
