Londons oldest restaurant Rules was established by Thomas Rule in 1798. Entering this establishment is like stepping back in time through the door to a gentlemans club. Their menu is very traditional English food with oysters, pies and puddings on offer. They specialise in game, most of it sourced from their very own Estate "Rules at Lartington Hall Park" in the high Pennines.

thats a long time to be in business!!!
Back in 2000, I took my dad to London for his very first trip to Europe. We had lunch here one day and what a great experience it was. The inside of the restaurant is quite beautiful with lots of antiques and stained glass. I don't recall what dad had to eat but, I had the Dover Sole and it was delicious. As one might guess, the service was excellent.
Wow, they need to let everyone in on their secret to staying in business for so long!
Too bad I missed it! Must include it during a future visit! ... and real English food can be very good!! :-)
Oh how fun, the Guardian just featured an article on old 'eating houses' - I can see people wolfing down on game in all forms here :)
I like the way you cropped this photo horizontally, Mo. Very cool. This restaurant is not one I know. I hope I remember it next time I am in London. It sounds like the kind one has to see at least once in a lifetime.
I suppose a strict dress code would be one of their Rules!
Put me down for a visit next time I'm in London also Mo! You should get a commission on all overseas 'blogger' meals!!
