Petticoat Lane

The oldest market in Britain with a colourful history.  Imagine it with elm trees and hedgerows. The smell of fresh baking bread, little country cottages and pigs in the lane.
Then we move into the 17th century and the Huguenots arrive with master weavers settling here, complimenting the fabric dyers of the area.
In the 19th century a new wave of immigrants settled in the area.  The Jews fleeing persecution in Eastern Europe who entered the garment industry.  The area was severely damaged during WWII and most of its inhabitants moved out.  In the 1970's the new Indian immigrants settled here and the markets once again became a vibrant community that continues today.

The used to be a pub called The Black Raven in Petticoat Lane and at one time is was a popular hang out for Teddy Boys. I went there in the late 60's and they had a Juke Box with all the old rock n roll records on it. I wonder if the pub is still there ?

That is a lot of history for this little street.

That's an amazing story. We don't have much of that here. In Ocala, they talk about the war between the Seminole Indians and the U.S. Army in the late 1800s. Before that, just swamps, mosquitoes, gators and more native Americans...
