For more than 50 years Gaby's has been serving salt beef and falafels to its customers. Its a place where theatre goers and stars rub shoulders.
This time lat year Westminster Council approved plans to oust the popular deli in favour of a ubiquitous chain. What they hadn't counted on was the wrath of the public. A campaign led by the local newspaper and a host of stars together with the public was successful in gaining another year for the deli.
What will happen this year remains to be seen. Watch this space.

The deli should win, we've got far too many chains around.
Shame Westminster Council. Long live small business!
Now that would be a horrible shame! When I travel, I try to find places like this and I avoid the chains. Why would I want to go somewhere new and different just to experience the same old food and atmosphere I can get at home. Now that I think about it, I avoid them at home too.
I'll take a longtime local cafe over a chain any time. I hope Gaby's has another 50 years of success.
Hurray for that. (Though I can't say I like salt beef.)
Big chains are never any good, Glad that the deli is still around.
Gaby's look like the sort of place that would attract a wonderful eclectic.mix of customers which gives a unique ambiance rarely found in big cities. Hopefully it will survive for many years to come and next time I'm in London I shall drop in for salt beef and falafels.
"Adelaide and Beyond"
Even though I use a lot of chains, like Starbucks and Panera, it is good to retain as many decent independent stores as possible. We need variety.
I haven't heard of this place but I love salt beef and falafels! (Preferably not together). I shall have to go there.
Phew - and hooray for Gaby's (and all the supporters)!
Gaby once gave me a generous amount of hyssop, when I'd expressed appreciation of the flavour it imparted to roast lamb. I loved the place before that; after, I loved it even more. Part of the fabric of theatreland, for theatre- and opera-goers - and everyone and anyone else. Thanks for evoking so many happy memories.
