Gnomes

Where did the tradition of garden gnomes come from.Are they all friendly or are some malevolent?  This gnome is sitting in the roof top garden of a canal boat.  Perhaps he should have had a fishing line rather than a pipe.

    I've seen a lot of garden gnomes but never one on a boat. Nice find.
