The borough of Hackney is located in east London and was for a long time very industrialised. Since the redevelopment for the Olympics, the area has continued to get a make over and has become popular with young, trendy and artists. Hackney Central, Hackney Marshes, Hackney South, these all give a clear indication which part of the borough they are. So where is Hackney Wick? Well it seems that Wick is a Gaelic word meaning Estuary town. This quarter of Hackney sits on the river Lea alongside the marshland that leads out to the sea.
That is nice they use the buildings for housing now.
ReplyDeleteYes, this recycling of former light and even heavier manufacturing areas into Bohemian/trendy and then just plain expensive ones goes on here too (like SoHo in NYC has become, and the DUMBO area under the Brooklyn Bridge in Brooklyn is on its way to becoming) ..I have seen pictures from 1914 say and then from today and all these picturesque places in Paris have become cleansed and "blanded out" out now with gentrification (like gone are all the weird old little shops with their strange signs etc)
ReplyDeleteI've learned something new!!

Been interested to see how Hackney Wick is coming along, it's happening so fast. There are lots of places called WIck. The one I always think of is Hampton Wick, near Hampton Court.
