Stand on the RIght

The rules in London are that you must stand on the right when taking an escalator, this allows those in a desperate hurry to run or walk briskly on the left.
Never, never stand on the left.  Now how are you supposed to know that if you are a visitor?  Well initially by the runners getting cross.
Recently some of the stations with large numbers of tourists have been given another clue.  Blue footprints painted on the escalators.  The British like to be subtle about these things.

Perhaps painted running men on the left would emphasise the message;-)

People standing on the left should be shot (in love obviously)!

The same rule applies in the Toronto Subway but I like the way it's expressed in London.

I always thought that was so clever in London and most people did the right thing. In the Netherlands we never had those rules, but recently I noticed people are standing on the right and others are running by at the left side now. Great, we learned something from the London people!

A genius solution to the problem...well the endless 'Stand on the right' signs certainly don't seem to be working!

So nice and more helpful than Washington DC, where there's no way for poor tourists to know - other than people shoving past them with a few choice words. Ah, the charm of DC...

We should do that over here too.

This gave me a laugh, but it is also a very intelligent bit of signage.

Well, it's exactly the same rule in France, but I still haven't noticed any sign there !
