I wonder what sounds those crosswalk machines are making. When I press the button for a crosswalk it says "Wait" and then makes a rapid fire sound when it's safe.
It's always good to wait for the signal and even then it's good to check every direction very carefully. Some drivers seem to have it in for pedestrians.
When I see elderly people whose gaits are impaired, I wonder how on earth they are going to be able to cross a busy urban street in the time that is specified. Even though I am healthy and in good shape, there are some intersections that I can barely get across in time. Pity those who are slower.

Playing it safe is the best bet.
London crosswalks bring to mind the necessity to watch for traffic coming from the opposite direction, and it most famous crosswalk, on Abbey Road.

That road does look busy, so safety first.
