The Clock Tower

Can you imagine a clock tower being erected in honour of a politician?  Well this one was.  Not only that, members of the the public made donations to cover the costs to build it.  However that was back in1895.  Haven't times changed?
The politician was Henry Reader Williams (1822-1897) a local councillor who influenced the style of architecture and protection of the vast green spaces.
The area Crouch End  in north London was on the medieval route north of London.  It became a parish around 1300 but it was not until Victorian times that it really developed.  These days it is a very chichi area surrounded by woods

Clock towers were important to most people back then when most of them did not have a time piece.

One of my favorite subjects! We don't have too many clock towers around here though unfortunately. This one is beautiful!

We really must have a whip round to build something like this for Boris!

No, I don't think we will be building any clock towers to our recent politicians unless maybe there are on a prison.

It looks like a pleasant area... and it's a beautiful clock tower.

I think the only tower that could be erected here for a politician would be a prison to hold that crack smoking idiot mayor down in Toronto.

There won't be clock towers erected for most US politicians I can think of. Crouch End? That is a new one to me.

If we ever have a politician who will protect vast green spaces, I'll head the fundraising committee.
