Imagine the smoke from coal fires billowing out of each of these ornate chimneys during Victorian times. Fires are banned in London now so the pea soup smog of those earlier times only exists in the stories in books.
I can't help but wonder how decorative the hearths are that these chimneys lead down to. Or if in fact they are still there, maybe they've long been removed and smooth walls have taken their place.

It's very easy to imagine London back then. We have all read the books and seen the movies depicting that time.
I am completely fascinated by the chimneys at Hampton Court - if there isn't a book about them, there should be.
In my part of the world the coal burning has been replaced by cars.
Lovely chimneys!
First page of 'Bleak House' reveals Victorian daily smoke and grime.
Would such a house be allowed to remove fireplaces today?
Never realsied they had banned burning coal, still happens out here in the sticks. You can remove the fireplace butthe chimny brest is another matter.
Is this in Fulham? Or Knightsbridge?
The soot must have collected on one's clothes if you were outside too long.
I feel like I've stared at those chimneys before.
These are so beautiful Mo.
I can remember the smell of coal smoke in the winter when I was a child. Our house had a coal furnace until I was about ten years old.
It is nice that the chimneys are still there as they do add extra charm to the old buildings.
I do like the architectural detail!
Those chimneys are wonderful.
The image brought back some memories from books and films.
It always fascinate me passing & thinking about the history some areas of London have had. I have followed a few guided walks in different parts of the city, and it has been very interesting.
