Ted’s Birthday …

Hip Hip Hooray it’s Ted’s birthday today … my very 1st birthday … well in in blog terms anyway, and the Doll wanted to know how I wanted to celebrate the occasion.

In a place like London the possibilities are endless. I could be very English and have afternoon tea, and enjoy an array of delicious morsels while being driven around famous London icons in an old red London routemaster bus. I could rent my very own “pod” on the London Eye and then, with as many friends as I could cram inside, admire the London skyline and watch the sunset turn the muddy Thames royal blue, while enjoying nibbles and champagne.  Later, I could go to any number of fabulous restaurants followed by a late evening trip to a secret speak-easy to indulge in cocktails designed especially for me … I could even have a mobile cocktail bar come to me at home!

A friend who shall remain nameless (Diane) celebrated her birthday earlier this week by taking in an Easter Country Fair in the Lee Valley on the outskirts of London, and she invited me along. It was great fun and had everything you expect at a country fair, like donkey rides, a merry go round, and home-made caramel vodka. There were fairground games offering prizes if you could catch fat plastic ducks with very thin plastic fishing poles, knock over tin cans with tennis balls from 50 feet, throw darts that were so blunt and featherless that hitting the dart board at all was a mark of pure skill, and a misspent youth. We ate lots of fairground food and got lots of indigestion.

We watched terrier racing, dog training (at least I think that’s what it was) and the highlight of the show, the falconry display. We topped off the day at her house by laying on the couches drinking wine straight from the bottle and watching reruns of that classic 1980’s soap “Days of Our Lives” … ok some of this might not be entirely true …

Meanwhile … the Doll said that she was ignoring my totally silly suggestions for a birthday cake and a present.  Instead she was getting me what she knew I would appreciate and would enjoy. But, what would I not have appreciated and enjoyed about a life-size replica of myself made of chocolate cake .. or my very own vineyard in the South of France?

So… anyway as you can tell … I got pies and beer, and it was all just what I wanted really.
